AI can draft a research memo in seconds. It can also cite cases that don’t exist, or describe real ones wrong. For an attorney, a single bad citation in a filing is a serious problem.

The challenge

Attorneys wanted the speed of AI research without having to re-check every citation from scratch. Asking one model to check its own work isn’t much of a check: it tends to repeat its own mistakes with the same confidence.

What we built

Case Law Research is an AI-assisted legal research workspace built around adversarial verification. One AI researches each question, and a second, independent AI fact-checks every case the first one cites.

How it works

  1. Ask a question, or check a citation. Research mode takes a legal question. Citation check mode takes a case name or citation and confirms whether it’s real and correctly described. Either can be scoped to a jurisdiction and practice areas.
  2. The researcher answers with live web search. It researches with current sources, explains the legal principles and leading cases, and lists every case it relied on, along with the web sources it used.
  3. The verifier challenges every citation. A second, independent AI re-researches each case on its own and returns a verdict for it: confirmed, disputed or unverified, with a short note explaining why. In the sample research shown here, it flags a real Supreme Court case whose rule was later abandoned, before that case could be cited for the wrong proposition.
  4. Everything stays organized. Citations collect in a side panel with their verdicts. Attorneys can pin cases to a library shared across projects, attach notes to a search or to a specific case, and export a whole thread to Markdown for a brief.

Built for how attorneys work

  • Folders, projects and searches. Research is organized the way matters are.
  • Search everything. Ctrl+K finds any saved search, case or note.
  • Push-to-talk dictation. Hold the mic button, or the Control key, to speak a question instead of typing it.
  • Honest about its limits. Every search carries a reminder that verification badges are AI-estimated and must be confirmed against an official citator before filing.

Where it stands

Case Law Research is a tool built by IEQ, and each user’s research stays private to them.

It’s a faster, more careful first pass: it shows its sources and checks its own work, and the attorney always makes the final call.
